Feb 8th - Asahi Breweries To Double M&A Spending

Asahi Breweries Ltd. plans to spend up to 400 billion yen on mergers and acquisitions in the two years through 2012, double the amount spent in the previous two years.

The major beer maker is stepping up M&As to gain sales momentum ahead of its transition to a holding company structure in July. Asahi has been conducting huge buyouts in recent years, including the acquisition of an Australian soft drink maker for 77 billion yen in 2009.
Asahi Group Holdings, to be set up on July 1, will oversee Asahi's liquor, soft drink and food companies, as well as a firm managing all of the current foreign units.
Asahi aims to boost group sales to 2-2.5 trillion yen by fiscal 2015 from about 1.48 trillion yen in fiscal 2010, in the hope of becoming a global top 10 food maker.

Feb 4th - Sapporo To Buy Pokka In Soft-Drink Push

Sapporo Holdings Ltd. plans to spend about 30 billion yen to turn soft-drink producer Pokka Corp. into a subsidiary, adding to its 20% stake.

The move comes at a time when the Japanese brewer is scrambling to strengthen its soft-drink segment, which is smaller than its beer and real estate operations, in an effort to diversify its earnings. The firm also aims to accelerate its overseas expansion by tapping Pokka's sales channels in Asia outside Japan.
Sapporo will take a majority stake in the canned-coffee purveyor by acquiring shares from investment fund Advantage Partners LLP, which is Pokka's largest shareholder, and major confectioner and dairy firm Meiji Holdings Co., which owns roughly 20% of Pokka.
Sapporo's soft-drink business generates roughly 30 billion yen in annual sales, while Pokka logs about 97 billion yen in sales. Their combined sales would rank about eighth in the domestic soft-drink market.
Pokka has strength in lemon juice and is perhaps best known for its canned-coffee products. It owns some 90,000 vending machines mainly in greater Tokyo and Nagoya. Vending machines, which sell products at listed prices, have been bringing in stable profits amid intensifying price competition.
Pokka produces and sells beverages in Singapore, and it plans to construct a plant in Malaysia. Sapporo has cooperated with Pokka in production and distribution since taking a stake in 2009.
For Pokka, becoming a subsidiary of Sapporo means that it will have access to the brewer's strong finances and can boost sales of its products at home and abroad.
Domestic soft-drink manufacturers are increasingly consolidating to stay alive as the domestic market becomes saturated. Asahi Breweries Ltd. last year announced acquisitions of House Foods Corp.'s (2810) water business and Kagome Co.'s barley tea operations.

Jan 14th - Suntory Holdings Ready To Put Y300bn Into M&As: President

Suntory Holdings Ltd. is prepared to spend 300 billion yen on mergers and acquisitions in the medium term, President Nobutada Saji told The Nikkei on Thursday.

Suntory plugged more than 400 billion yen into M&As from 2008 to 2010, including its 2009 acquisition of French beverage firm Orangina Schweppes Group. Such moves ended up lifting the firm's debt-equity ratio to around 1.

Nobutada Saji
Now the plan is to invest 300 billion yen in future M&As while keeping the ratio from going above 1. Suntory will likely dip into its own cash as well as take out loans.
Suntory and Kirin Holdings Co. began merger negotiations in 2009, only to officially end them last February because of irreconcilable differences over such issues as the integration ratio.
"That chapter is over," Saji said.
But he also held out the possibility of a future relationship, saying, "We didn't part on bad terms, so another attempt at forging an alliance targeting growth could be an option."
Suntory has targeted consolidated sales of around 2 trillion yen in two years. Group sales are believed to have reached 1.75 trillion yen for the year ended Dec. 31. The company aims to raise its percentage of overseas sales to 25% from the estimated 22% of fiscal 2010.
Suntory's pretax profit likely hit 100 billion yen last fiscal year as its pretax profit margin came to around 6%.
"We hope to secure a 200 billion yen pretax profit about five years down the road while raising the pretax margin to at least 10%," Saji said.
To achieve these goals, Suntory will work to build alliances and partner with both domestic and foreign food and beverage companies.
"We will actively pursue M&As as a way to expand the Suntory brand worldwide," Saji said.

4th Nov - Ajinomoto Earmarks Y24bn To Build New Plants In Thailand

-Ajinomoto Co.  will spend around 24 billion yen through 2013 to build new plants in Thailand to help it tap demand in Southeast Asia, India and the Middle East.

Demand for flavor-enhancing seasonings is growing in Asia.
The seasonings firm has earmarked roughly 15 billion yen to construct a new plant for its trademark Aji-No-Moto monosodium glutamate powder in the central Thai province of Ayutthaya. Work will start next month, with production to begin in March 2013. This will be the firm's first Aji-No-Moto plant in Thailand in 15 years.
Able to churn out 60,000 tons a year, the new plant will raise Aji-No-Moto output capacity by 10% when operating at full capacity. Currently, the company produces just over 600,000 tons a year, mostly in Thailand and Brazil. Output will be sold primarily to Southeast Asian nations in the vicinity, as well as to India and the Middle East, where the company's presence has been weak.
Aji-No-Moto is used as a flavor-enhancing seasoning and as an ingredient for adding zest to soup stock. Amid population growth and improving standards of living in Asia, demand for monosodium glutamate is ballooning. Ajinomoto anticipates increased demand from retailers and restaurants.
Also, the company will invest 9.3 billion yen in Thailand to ramp up production of nucleic acids, another ingredient for savory seasonings. Although it makes 10,000 tons a year in Thailand and Japan, production will be boosted to over 15,000 tons by autumn 2013. Seasonings using the additional nucleic acid produced will be sold throughout Asia. Nucleic acid is the key ingredient for Ajinomoto's Hon-Dashi flavor seasoning and its Knorr instant soup.
The 24 billion yen investment in Thailand will be the firm's biggest overseas spending spree. By accelerating its development of Asian markets, Ajinomoto seeks to lift food sales to consumers in the region to 200 billion yen by fiscal 2016, up from last fiscal year's roughly 130 billion yen.

Delicious seafood

OK, OK, I know it may not look so appetizing, but believe me - the taste was amazing. Slightly salty, crunchy skin, and soft inside.

Fresh Sashimi

Almost too atractive to eat .... (almost!) The colour was beetroot red and the scent of lavendar from the flower buds created a relaxing aroma. Paused for a short while to appreciate the beauty and preperation - then tucked in.
