Fuji Electric Holdings Co. said Friday it will set up a joint venture with General Electric Co. of the U.S. on Feb. 1 to make next-generation smart meters.

The date was officially set after a longer-than-expected antitrust screening process in China.

The venture for network-capable electricity meters had initially planned to get under way in October.
